Hastings Library of Things (HLoT) is welcoming spring with some community events, new collaborations and expanded recycling options.

To help those who are spring cleaning and de-cluttering, HLoT will be hosting one of their popular Free Shops at the Stade Hall on Saturday 14 March between 11am and 3pm. This is a simple and sociable way to share unwanted items and find useful things. Residents are invited to bring things they no longer need to reduce waste while supporting the local community.

HLoT is now located within the Maslow Housing Cooperative hub at 5 Harold Place. They say: “Maslow is a lovely space, colourful, friendly and fun.” Maslow Studios also house their own workshops and the popular Babilicious café.

In collaboration with Maslow, HLoT’s sister project, Make and Mend, is now running a new weekly sewing social, In Stitches, every Friday from 1-4pm. Open to hand sewers, machine users and complete beginners alike, the sessions are drop-in, cost £5 per session and require no booking.

With more space now available, the project has introduced additional recycling streams to make it easier to responsibly dispose of hard-to-recycle items. New options include batteries, bras, mobile phones and tablets (which will be repaired and redistributed where possible), printer ink and toner, foreign currency and stamps. Items can be dropped off during opening hours.

After five years, HLoT is reviewing its membership charges. From 1 April 2026, the minimum annual membership contribution will increase from £3 to £5. This means that anyone facing financial difficulty will still be able to access around £4,000 worth of shared tools and equipment for just £5 per year, borrowing as often as they like, with no additional fees.

Hastings Library of Things is open on Tuesdays, 12-4pm and Fridays, 11-5pm or by arranged appointment.
