Quaker Meeting House Finally Reopens
In January a major part of Hastings town centre became flooded due, it is alleged, to the failure by Southern Water to properly maintain the drainage. One of the areas worst affected was South Terrace, where basements were completely inundated causing horrific damage and distress to the occupiers.

Hastings Quaker Meeting House at 5 South Terrace was another casualty of the floods and had to close for repairs. In the end the repairs took more than six months, but it was an opportunity to undertake refurbishment as well as extensive repairs.
The building is now better than ever, with new carpeting and a new kitchen. Ian Bunch, the lettings manager, says: “We’re very excited to be looking forward to the return of our existing hirers but we also now have capacity for new hirers who may wish to use our facilities.”
He points out that the Meeting House has been an important meeting place for many local groups and organisations; such groups being forced to cease operations or find alternative premises first during Covid and then during the reconstruction work.
Unfortunately, the disruption took place while many people were still trying to find a way forward following the Covid outbreak, which hit the poorest and those with health issues hardest, and even now many are still experiencing problems.
But now it’s welcome back to the new upgraded Quaker Hall. It charges reasonable rates, is wheelchair accessible and even has a multi-storey parking nearby.
