JEN ROUSE AND GEMMA REESE

Name: Parents For Future Hastings & St Leonards

Age: Newborn! We started this year (but umbrella group, Parents For Future, has been going since 2019).

Purpose: A climate justice group inspired by the youth strike movement. We’re parents, carers, grandparents, aunts and uncles… and anyone who thinks kids deserve a safe and happy future.

What IS an activist group, anyway? Is it all chucking paint on things and getting arrested?

No, not us! This is a peaceful group who want to push for a better world for our kids in the face of the climate crisis. In this summer of unprecedented heatwaves and deadly wildfires, it’s clear that this isn’t something that’s happening in the far-off future. Climate change is here now… so we need to act!

Is there much point in that? Doesn’t seem to be much we can do…

There’s so much that can be gained by joining together to campaign – locally, nationally and globally! History shows that when enough people act, positive change can happen incredibly quickly. We know most people oppose oil and gas but not everyone is taking action. We want to reach that tipping point!

Maybe…

It’s not only about changing the world! Coming together to take small, achievable steps can help us stay positive. A recent government survey suggests that three in four people struggle with climate anxiety – but research shows taking action is one of the best things you can do to feel better. Plus, it’s fun!

Yes, I do feel helpless when I see the headlines…

Joining PFF means kindness and community. It’s hard caring for our children in a world undergoing its biggest challenge in history. But we can support each other!

OK, but I’m not sure I’m the right person – I don’t know much about the issues.

You don’t need to! The most powerful way to persuade others isn’t facts but feelings. All you need is your love for your children – we’ll help with the rest.

I’m already so busy though…

Yep, so are we! As parents we know the score and we can meet you at your commitment level! Burnout isn’t helpful. But this is a make-or-break moment in human history. We have to find time to safeguard our children’s future. And how amazing for our kids to see us doing something positive for the planet they’ll inherit?

We hope you have enjoyed reading this article. The future of our volunteer led, non-profit publication would be far more secure with the aid of a small donation. You can also support local journalism by becoming a friend of HIP. It only takes a minute and we would be very grateful.
