Can we expect noise-detecting traffic cameras on the roads of Hastings soon?

The devices are currently being trialled in Bradford, Bristol, Great Yarmouth and Birmingham in an attempt to discourage louder motorists. Comprised of a video camera and several microphones, the new “noise cameras” are intended to pick out engines unecessarily revving or using illegal exhausts. Westminster has pledged to spend £300,000 on the technology, which will provide digital evidence that can be used by police to fine drivers.

No doubt the installation of the cameras will be a cause for celebration for some Hastings residents.

Ross, a HIP reader, wrote to HIP saying, “Have you seen that noise cameras are being tested out in England and Wales to detect and fine loud engines – making streets more peaceful? Whereas I don’t normally support state surveillance – this however, I would fully support in Hastings.”

The transport secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, said: “Rowdy road drivers beware – these
new cameras will help the police clamp down on those who break the legal noise limits or use illegal modified exhausts to make excessive noise in our communities.

“We will be working closely with the local authorities and police to share any findings, and I hope this technology paves the way for quieter, peaceful streets across the country.”

Technical consultant Atkins-Jacobs Joint Venture reassured drivers that the cameras would be “highly targeted,” focussing only on those making excessive noise.

Noise pollution has been linked to stress, cardiovascular disease, strokes and dementia. UK government figures estimate the annual social cost of urban road noise, including lost productivity from sleep disturbance and healthcare, at about £10bn.

Ross continues in his letter to us, “I know for a fact many residents share the same feeling and want the loud motorbikes/engines fined and banned so we can have more peaceful streets. This could be a really special moment to add pressure to authorities to get this installed in Hastings, with the ultimate goal of having quieter streets. I would love for that happen here.”
