Hastings Council Plans to Clean Up
Hastings Borough Council is considering developing an in-house street cleaning service and bulky waste removal when the current contract ends in 2019.
Residents and the Council share their unhappiness at the current contract. Colin Fitzgerald, lead councillor for the environment said, “This is a priority issue for our town. A densely populated town like Hastings is extremely reliant on clean streets. Bringing the contract in-house would enable the council to react quickly to problem areas, for example, clearing overflowing litter bins on the seafront during bank holiday weekends rather than reporting it to the contractor and relying on them to deal with the problem.”
The new service would operate seven days a week, and will offer staff and management training with our enforcement services that would enable them to better address issues such as breaches of trade waste rules and littering that comes from takeaways and cafes.
The new service will also allow a more cost-effective way of delivering bulky waste and fly tip removal. As council staff, employees will also be redeployed during severe weather to help clear snow and ice from public areas. Managers for the new service will also be considering extending the service to other public sector partners such as Optivo, who operate large areas of social housing in the town. The refuse and recycling service will continue to be provided by a contractor, procured through the East Sussex joint waste partnership.

Unfortunately, the new service will not be implemented until July 2019, which means that litter will continue to plague Hastings streets. After a recent conversation with Cllr Colin Fitzgerald I have discovered that the KIER Group, currently under contract to HBC, are not fulfilling there contractual agreements. It also turns out that KIER is a subsidiary of the now bankrupt Carillion. Apparently, KIER have been sucking the money out of Hastings Borough Council via a ‘shell’ company that has no accountability. What this suggests is that KIER will continue to spend taxpayers hard earned cash, while giving minimum service in return. Meanwhile, the streets and beaches of Hastings/St. Leonards are awash with litter that can, and probably does, end up in the sea.
