Food Network Joins Bankuet
Nationally there has been a lot of focus on food poverty and it’s certainly a huge issue in our town. The Hastings and St Leonards Food Network covers all aspects of food insecurity, not just sourcing food for those in need, but also promoting local growing and composting and projects reducing food waste. There are also workshops and webinars educate local school children to healthy eating, adult learning programmes in cookery, budgeting, nutrition, regular monthly meetings on food related issues and lots more.
The network has recently signed up to Bankuet “Getting food banks what they need, when they need it” as one of their latest initiatives to tackle food poverty. As well as simply supplying food – and the demand is enormous – the network is also looking at the ‘bigger picture’ and working hard to tackle some of the root causes of food poverty. The idea is to bring people together, sharing resources, knowledge and tackling local food issues together. To help achieve this, the group works with a range of community food partners including Education Futures Trust, Hastings Food Bank, East Sussex College Group, The Pantry and Warming up the Homeless. This has proved very successful, particularly in avoiding duplication.
