Women of Hastings! Continues

Women of Hastings! writing group was set up by Glenys Jacques to create space for local women’s voices. Sadly, she she died in November last year (See HIP Issue 265 Remembering Glenys) . We now remain a small collective of women who plan to carry on writing this column and submitting articles to HIP.

While Glenys will be hugely missed, we have plenty of ideas to continue what she started: writing for women. Issues we plan to address in coming months include: gender inequality, reproductive rights, neurodiversity, period poverty, food insecurity and hygiene banks. And there are many more issues affecting women that we hope to cover in the coming year.

If you would like to find out more about this writing group – how to join in or to share your story – please contact us at [email protected].

If you are an adult with number dyslexia – Dyscalculia – or just have everyday problems with maths, you can enrol in free numeracy classes in East Sussex. The courses, in different locations across the county including Hastings, aim to help adults become more confident with numbers through the government’s ‘Multiply’ initiative.

The easy-access self-referral programme includes courses concentrating on day-to-day life skills such as budgeting and understanding payslips, as well as sessions that combine maths with other subjects including pottery, cookery and horticulture so people can improve their numeracy in a relaxed and fun environment. There are also one-to-one courses in money management and budgeting, as well as courses for the construction, hospitality and tourism, health and social care sectors, and even for tree surgeons.

More than 500 people have taken part in the programme in East Sussex since it began in January last year, and previous learners have had very positive experiences.

Courses vary in length from a few hours weekly for a set number of weeks to one-off workshops and are available across the county until March 2025.  See: careerseastsussex.co.uk/multiply Or contact: [email protected] 07762 409961

We hope you have enjoyed reading this article. The future of our volunteer led, non-profit publication would be far more secure with the aid of a small donation. You can also support local journalism by becoming a friend of HIP. It only takes a minute and we would be very grateful.
