£100,000 Charity Giveaway
The David Hunt Trust announced in May that it had set aside £100,000 to donate to some of the smaller charities and community projects based in East and West Sussex.
The trust donated a similar sum in 2023 to a range of charities including Cancer United, Dementia Support and Worthing Mencap. David’s partner Catherine, who helped him set up the charity and is now a trustee, explains. “Last year was such an outstanding success, we have decided we will try to make this an annual event.”
David Hunt formed his charitable trust with money from the sale of his furniture business in 2010 after retiring to the Sussex Coast. Over the past 14 years, he has donated considerable sums of money to numerous charities and supported local people, raising money for their community projects. David was voted Worthing and Arun Community Star of the Year in 2012 for his generosity to local people in need.
David is now 86 and, sadly, uses a wheelchair to get around following a spinal cord injury. However, he still takes an active part in the organising of the day-to-day needs of the trust. He is committed to carrying out his philanthropic work and was excited to launch his new £100,000 giveaway as an annual community grant scheme, funds permitting, for the people of Sussex.
This year, the funding awards will be divided into different amounts with £20,000 as the top grant and £500 as the minimum amount. A total of 30-40 awards will be made.
All applications must be received by the end of July with a clear explanation of how the money will be used. The applications will be considered by a panel of judges, and the successful applicants will receive their grants in the autumn. Groups that are not registered charities can apply but will require investigation of their financial records by the charity trust as due diligence. There are plans to present the funding awards to successful applicants at the prestigious Ham Manor Golf Club, the venue for last year’s inaugural ceremony.
