A key aspect of this year’s Refugee Week programme is the Food Festival. Between 13 and 21 June, local restaurants, cafés and safe havens across Hastings and surrounding areas are invited to feature a special Recipe of Courage or Dish of Courage on their menus.

Refugee week itself is being launched at a fundraising dinner and community gathering that also celebrates Recipes of Courage at Alexandra Park Greenhouse on 15 June.

This special event also marks the release of the Cookzine, a unique collection of Recipes of Courage shared by people living in Hastings. Each recipe is accompanied by a story, offering insight into personal journeys, memories of home and the everyday resilience of those who have made the town their own.

Bringing people together around a shared table, the evening highlights how food can act as a bridge between cultures – creating space for connection, storytelling and solidarity. It sets the tone for the week ahead, demonstrating how simple acts of coming together can reflect the deeper meaning of courage.

As the project’s CEO, who has lived experience of seeking refuge, reflects: “Food has the power to bring communities together in ways that nothing else can. It reminds us that courage is something we all share, and that by coming together, we can support one another and build something stronger.”
