South Saxons Ladies 1, Mid-Sussex 1

Just two points separate the top four teams in the Division 1 Martlets section of the South East Hockey Women’s League after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Horntye between South Saxons and Haywards Heath team, Mid-Sussex.

The visitors had lost only one league game all season, and the draw ensured that they retain their position at the head of the table with five matches to play. But Saxons stretched them all the way.

In the absence of captain Kat Jenner, Caitlin Merrison and Ellie Studholme drove the home team forward. Both goals came in the first half; the second half remained at level pegging. Saxons pressed hard in and around their opponents’ penalty box in the final minutes without being able to force a clear opening.

The Hastings team were unlucky to be relegated last season from the higher Division 1 West after they finished tenth out of 12 teams. The players are hoping to return there, though they seem uncertain whether promotion will be offered at the end of the current season to the top two teams in the Martlets league or just the winner.

Amelia Acott, another long-serving player, says she’s happy to play in either league. “It’s been a fun season so far,” she declared after Saturday’s game.

And it was a good day all round for the club as the men’s first team pulled off an excellent 4-2 away win against Folkestone Optimists to shore up their position in Division 1 East.
