BASEBALL: Pirates Run Aground
JAMES YOUNG
The Hastings Pirates’ baseball season came to a disappointing end on Saturday 12 September when the team was knocked out of the league play-offs by Guildford Millers.
The final score of 11-4 was a fair reflection of events on the field, with a strong Millers side, playing with home advantage, jumping out to an 8-2 lead after three innings. Though the Pirates tried valiantly to get back into the contest, notably through third baseman Liam Drane, who notched two hits, a trio of Guildford pitchers largely shut down the Hastings bats, so potent in the team’s charge to the BBF Division 5 South title.
Despite the disappointment the Pirates have much to be proud of in securing the division title and run to the play-offs. The challenge now will be to match the club’s heightened expectations in 2027.
“The experience has given us the desire to get back to the postseason every year,” general manager Clive Raines says. “We want to keep growing and build a future for baseball in Hastings.”
The Pirates’ 2027 pre-season training and open try-outs will begin early next year. For more information, follow them at instagram.com/hastingspiratesbaseball
