Time and Motion
Dear HIP
There’s a wonderful silliness in our rail managers and local MP combining to knock an aggregate half an hour off the times of one return train per day to and from London at an extra cost of £37 (Express Rail Service Gets Peak Time Pricing in HIP 311).
That’s a charging rate of £74 per hour for the privilege of losing half an hour’s extra time working on your laptop on the off-peak train leaving ten minutes later. Okay if you’re on an expense account, Helena – the rest of us will cheerfully wait.
And who wants a faster train? The Brighton to London one-hour service turned that once-thriving resort into a dormitory town of rich DINKs (double income, no kids), inflating house prices to drive out families.
If the decision-makers knew anything about our railway line, they would be aware that we are blessedly protected from speedier trains by the one-track Victorian tunnels.
My personal experience of battling to save Winchelsea station in the 1980s was that the rail managers of that time regarded news of footfall and usage beyond Tonbridge as reports from outer darkness which they had no need to take into account. No change there then.

Post Office Pennies
The post office on London Road in St Leonard’s has been there for over 45 years that I know of (Scaffolding, Struggle and St Leonards Post Office in HIP 312). I can remember sitting outside it as a small child with my Guy Fawkes dummy, doing penny for the guy. Now here I am, 51 years old and still using that same post office. Let’s fight to save it!
