What Can I Do?
The scale of the problem of homelessness can seem so overwhelming that many people simply don’t know what they can do to help. Well, the first thing is a simple one – speak up. Living on the streets puts an enormous strain on mental health, with long hours of loneliness, isolation and sleep deprivation. A smile and a friendly hello can make all the difference. Talk with kindness. Ask about their situation with simple questions such as ‘how are you feeling?’ and show interest in the reply. If you feel comfortable, ask if there is anything you can do or if there is anything that’s needed.
You may want to help financially. Think carefully about giving money. Many street homeless have addiction problems and once you give money, you cannot control how it is spent.
A better alternative may be a warm blanket or some food. Ask at a nearby café to see if you can pay for a hot drink and a sandwich, which can be collected later.
Ask about people’s engagement with outreach services and offer to notify local support services. Listen to what people have to say and always respect their wishes.
Once you begin to engage, they cease to be just another anonymous street sleeper but a person that you come to know and see about the town. Someone you talk to and someone who gives you a different perspective on the life you lead.
All it takes is a moment to stop and say hello.
We hope you have enjoyed reading this article. The future of our volunteer led, non-profit publication would be far more secure with the aid of a small donation. You can also support local journalism by becoming a friend of HIP. It only takes a minute and we would be very grateful.
