Unconventional…but Still Music
TOBY BULA-EDGE
Shifting in style and sound over a two hour performance, Sonics’ Spin Cycle returned on Sunday 7 June for its fifth edition.
The experimental brainchild of James Weaver and William Bunch, Spin Cycle sees a group of musicians play over two hours, in 15-minute overlapping sets. From this, a variety of trios are created. And from that results an ever-shapeshifting performance.
The fifth edition brought together a diverse group of musicians, including: Kyle Macleod (The Defamation Project and Sons of Ugly), HIP’s very own Harry Hawkins (Halfneck), Kit and Toby Bula (The Brothers Bula and The Mystic Shed),James Weaver (The Warrior Squares and Sonics), Jason Williams, William Bunch (Sonics), a poet, also called William, who kicked off proceedings with a poem he wrote a couple of hours before. Others included Spin Cycle stalwart, Dana.
With a variety of players came a variety of instruments. For example, Kit Bula played a couple of chairs by hitting them on the floor. William Bunch scratched some records. Harry Hawkins plucked away on a small banjo. Jason Williams smacked the strings of an acoustic guitar.
All of this made what Bunch referred to as “unconventional music”. But he hastened to add “it’s still music.”
The performance was a success. Weaver added: “It was experimental music in its purest form – exploration and collaboration – while remaining playful and fun.”
The next Spin Cycle will be in September. More details to come.
