The Power of Radio: St Leonards, Hastings, the Shetlands, the World

STEVE LONG on featuring Hastings and St Leonards music on ‘The Collective’ via Shetland Islands-based radio station 60 North Radio.
In 2004, 60 North FM was launched. It was a dedicated tourist information radio service to provide local information about areas of Shetland that was conveyed in a relaxed ‘storytelling’ format by local experts. The station also supplied background music for the many online webcam watchers. Time moved on and in summer 2019 the new 60 North Radio platform was launched. 60 North Radio is now an internet radio station with a focus on supporting remote contribution broadcasting, with a truly eclectic range of songs and presenters, and this is where I come in.
During lockdown Mike Wade – who has his own show on a Saturday called The Radio Telescope – suggested I should do a show. After a few trial weeks, founder of the station Andy Steven decided I was worthy of a regular slot The Collective. Each week presents an hour’s music built around a theme, and on Friday 7 July at 9.00 pm the theme is ‘local heroes’ – 16 bands and artistes from the St Leonards and Hastings area. Tune in to see who is featured. The station now also has streaming set up in Chicago, London, Singapore and Sydney, so our local heroes will be broadcast worldwide. The nice thing is if you can’t listen live, you can visit the 60 North Radio website or even on Mixcloud, and hear the full programme. There is also a Facebook group where you can leave comments and/or suggest future themes.
The station’s ident uses the phrase ‘From Shetland to Shetland and the World.’ I’d like to think that I can now add to this ‘and to St Leonards and Hastings.’
