The Eternal Triangle Flows On
Trevor Watts’ Eternal Triangle returns to the Kino Teatr in St Leonards on 1 November, to celebrate the release of two albums. Studio album Gravity [released by Jazz in Britain] came out earlier this year, and has attracted rave reviews. Moving On [Sound of Niche] was recorded live in Nijmegen and released on 1 October.
This trio is formed from two duos. Keyboardist Veryan Weston has been playing with Saxophonist Trevor Watts since the early 1980s; percussionist Jamie Harris has partnered Watts since the late 1990s. Their duo is based on strong rhythmic and melodic ideas. Last autumn, Watts and Harris played a 16-date tour of the USA, culminating with a concert at the Jazz Gallery on Broadway. In 2021, the duos formed a Triangle.
French journalist Xavier Prevost describes the band:
“The music breathes under other horizons; Hispanic, Latin American, Middle Eastern. The sometimes melancholic accents often resolve themselves into pulsations, towards a lyricism that is as torn as it is heartbreaking.”
Trevor Watts was instrumental in defining improvisational music in the UK as a founding member of The Spontaneous Music Ensemble during the musically explosive 1960s. Later he experimented with Rock and World rhythms in his groups Amalgam and Moire Music, which included Hastings musicians Liane Carrol, Liam Genockey, Colin Gibson and Nana Tsiboe. “Watts is an absolutely amazing player” writes Adam Baruch, “and his saxophone improvisations sound as good as they did half a century earlier, with stamina and vitality completely intact.”
Watts has worked with an enormous list of other innovative musicians in the UK, Europe, and the States, among them Don Cherry, Steve Lacey, John Stevens, Bobby Bradford, Cyro Baptista and Adame Drame. His Drum Orchestra, a group that featured many fine Ghanaian drummers and singers, collaborated with Teatro Negro Barlovento, a 35-piece group from Venezuela, playing concerts at British Jazz Festivals, in South America, and for a BBC radio broadcast.
Attendees at the Kino-Teatr will hear music that combines the sound of two quite different duos into one very large-sounding Triangle.
