Perello Duoat the Beacon
Perello, the Liverpool-based guitar and vibes duo who enchanted their Kino-Teatr audience last summer, are back in Hastings on 7 August – this time at The Beacon.

Perello consists of virtuoso classical guitarist, Eleanor Kelly, and Mike Hughes, percussionist, on vibraphone. There are few guitar/vibes duos, but Kelly and Hughes feel the combination is successful due to the instruments’ similar timbres and melodic ranges. Committed to promoting a wider understanding of the vibraphone, Hughes has collaborated with contemporary classical composers and with leading musicians on the British jazz scene.
Perello play a mix of classical and jazz tunes by various composers ranging from Satie to Jobim. Kelly is also a particular champion of works by female composers. She has recently released Dedicatoria, a splendid CD of pieces by Carmen Guzmán, a once-celebrated but now largely forgotten Argentinian guitarist and composer who died in 2012. Kelly will play some of these.
The Beacon is worth a visit in itself. Judy Dewsbury (ex-fashion designer) and family moved into the rambling former language school in 1992, and have developed part of their home into a creative hub with a distinctly Bohemian feel. With the next generation already actively involved, The Beacon’s future appears to be secured.
Throughout the summer, The Beacon in St Mary’s Terrace offers food and drinks from Friday-Sunday inclusive. On Friday evenings there will also be free, curated live music and performances, of which the Perello Duo is one. 7 August, 7-9 pm. Perello Duo on youtube: youtube.com/watch?v=9kF2o3L7eYw
