On Saturday 11 June 2022 an enthusiastic crowd of people gathered in The Stade Hall to remember former Hastings Council leader Jeremy Birch. The event welcomed the publication of a beautifully produced book, designed by Erica Smith, about the life and work of a man still very much missed seven years after his death.

The book does much more than tell a story, it paints a vivid portrait of Jeremy, who did so much for our town. Rather than review it – which will happen in a future issue of HIP – the words of the contributors themselves can speak eloquently about this extraordinary person: “He would have made a brilliant MP”

“He was passionate, above all, about helping to achieve a society based on the socialist principles that guided his entire adult life”

”We miss him, of course, but he is still here with us in Hastings, around almost every corner”

“In 2015 Hastings lost an irreplaceable son”

• ‘Remembering Jeremy Birch’ will be available soon in local bookshops.

We hope you have enjoyed reading this article. The future of our volunteer led, non-profit publication would be far more secure with the aid of a small donation. You can also support local journalism by becoming a friend of HIP. It only takes a minute and we would be very grateful.
