Hastings Sinfonia Spring Concert
Hastings Sinfonia will be giving a concert at St John’s Church on 13 April. The Sinfonia is a local, inclusive orchestra. Founded in 2012 by Hastings composer Polo Piatti (now artistic director), they perform music that is popular and easy to listen to, often playing shorter pieces. They include old classics, popular works, film music, opera highlights and new melodic works by living composers; their concerts are therefore ideal entertainment for people new to classical music, for younger people, as well as serious music lovers. They aim to nurture talented young musicians and give them performance opportunities and to keep rehearsals thoroughly enjoyable – an important part of their philosophy.

The programme for the Sinfonia Spring Concert will be well-known and well-loved pieces – Verdi’s overture (you might recognise it as the Stella Artois tune), Wagner, Dvorak’s New World Symphony (the Hovis advert with the little boy, remember?), Sibelius’ Karelia Suite overture (‘This Week’ theme tune) among others. Piano soloist (in the Adagio from Grieg’s A Minor) will be Howard Southern, and trombone soloist Chris Schmidt will play on Piatti’s new piece, Catch Me If You Can.
Piatti, himself a composer, aims to write music that is “accessible” and writes in a style that some call ‘New Romantic’. He feels that post-Covid, musicians and audiences are looking for music which is both melodic and easy to listen to, emotionally appealing rather than avant-garde. Originally from Argentina, he has studied in Argentina, Paris, and Germany. Besides Hastings Sinfonia, he has also instigated an International Composers Festival whose patron is BAFTA-winning Debbie Wiseman, composer of many memorable television theme tunes.
The concert will be held at 7.30pm on 13 April at St John’s Church, St Leonards. For further details and link to ticketsource please see visit1066country.com/whats-on/hastings-sinfonia-orchestra-spring-concert-p23220
