The Mummery Co-op Funeralcare in Bexhill-on-Sea has announced the return of their much-anticipated school uniform swap initiative: Pass It On. The scheme, started by staff at the funeral home in August 2019, has been help-
ing families in the local community access free pre-used uniforms.
Items available for the clothing swap have been collected by staff at the Mummery funeral home from local schools lost property as well as from generous donations from families no longer in need of their uniforms or looking to swap for different sizes. Members of the local community have also donated a few brand-new items to the funeral home, ensuring no child has to go without.
The uniform swap has now taken the form of a pop-up shop within a disused office space within the funeral home. Operated by a team of dedicated volunteers as well as colleagues at the Coop Funeralcare, the shop is also a collection point for local charity shops who now redirect their entire uniform stocks to the Pass It On initiative.
The scheme has even gained the support of the local Councillor Christine Bayliss, who is keen to spread the word about the Pass It On initiative. There have also been numerous visits by the Bexhill Mayor, Lynn Lanyard, who has been visibly moved by the sheer volume of donations collected within the pop-up shop.
Nina Bush-Sims, Funeral Arranger at the Mummery says: “With many parents either out of work or placed on furlough during the lockdowns, we knew the cost of buying new uniforms for their growing children was too much… we felt compelled to step in and ensure no child has to go without. We hope that our initiative here in Bexhill-on-Sea will inspire Co-op Funeralcare colleagues across other homes to organise similar schemes.”
