Often, the people and streets where we live lack the care and attention they deserve. If there isn’t much sense of community in your neighbourhood, maybe more of us need to follow the example of 11-year-old Seraphina McAteer-Dahlberg.

Seraphina lives on the West Hill. She and her friend David Dinu were inspired to write a letter to her local community to urge people to make it a better place. In it, they ask people to do some litter picking every week and to help the homeless. But they also say: “Enjoy life while you can. And smile. Please make the world a better place for everyone.”

Seraphina and David wrote and signed the message; then after a neighbour offered to laminate it, they stuck 12 copies on lamp posts around their local area. Seraphina’s mother, Maria McAteer, says “They seem to be putting a smile on everyone’s face. As it appears that the request is for a limited time only, perhaps we should all do our best …”
