Hastings Friends of Al-Mawasi are holding a fundraising walk and cycle on Saturday 26 March ending with
a rally at 2pm at the Stade in Hastings Old Town.

Hastings Friends of Al-Mawasi are a group of residents who have reached out to make links with the Palestinian town in southern Gaza. Al-Mawasi is a remote fishing and farming community which was almost completely cut off from the rest of Gaza before 2005 because of Israeli settlements in the area. When the settlements withdrew in 2005 it was the beginning of the Israeli blockade of Gaza, something which continues to this day. All the money raised will go towards computer equipment for the Safe Space community centre in Al-Mawasi.

Cyclists will be starting their journey from Lewes railway station at 9am and will then cycle 40 miles to the Stade via Eastbourne and Bexhill – the same length as the wall that Israel built around Gaza to enforce the blockade. Walkers will start at noon from Glyne Gap.

The cycle is being organised with the South Coast branch of The Big Ride for Palestine, which has been organising fundraising cycle rides across Britain for the past seven years. Bill Perry in The Big Ride for Palestine from Hastings said “We’re delighted to support this brilliant local project, building links between people here and in Palestine. Our bike rides are about raising awareness and visibility of Palestinian solidarity – we ride through rural villages or towns and cities, flying our flags for Palestine, and we always get a warm reaction. So, it’s a great atmosphere on the ride and we welcome people of all ages and all abilities to get involved.”
