Food Charity Founders’ MBE
The two founders of a St Leonards-based food charity have both been awarded MBEs in the New Year’s Honours list. Dom and Alexandria Warren were given the honour for services to the eradication of food waste and poverty. They founded Dom’s Food Mission in 2015 to help families struggling through tough financial times. The charity focuses on redirecting surplus food, which would otherwise go to waste, to those in the community who need it. To help as many people as possible, the food mission welcomes families to attend their food hubs, which are spread across five areas of Hastings and St Leonards.
The mission says “Over the last two years, we have successfully prevented 200 metric tons of food from going to waste, redirecting these resources to serve the local community, equating to 500,000 meals.” Currently, they say they distribute 4,500 meals a week and now have a central distribution hub and four satellite centres. Through initiatives like the Helping Hand project, they educate children in cooking and nutrition. Dom told local media he was “just blown away” by the award and stressed that the charity’s success was a result of the work of their ‘amazing team’.
