Being a Man

Hastings Men’s Network is a project for men to connect, share and learn in the Hastings area, looking at what mature masculinity means in these current times. “What do you love about being a man?” This is one of the questions I ask men around Hastings.
The answer is almost always the same, a big pause and silence followed by a variation of: “That’s a tough question/I’ve never really thought about it before.” There’s often a bit of confusion, as many don’t identify with the alpha male stereotype of being male; and as a society, we haven’t updated our views of men for a while. So what does mature masculinity look like in the 2020s?
The network runs events: films, online men’s groups, walks, activities and collaborates with others to showcase the talent and skills of local men, celebrating what is good and working on those areas we want to change.
Our next four Saturday events include:
• 12 February: Walk: Church Wood in Hollington, 10.30-12noon.
• 19 February: Film: Griefwalker in St Leonards, 7-9pm.
• 26 February: Speckled Wood in Ore, 10-12noon.
• 5 March: Community allotment build using a no-dig approach at Ashburnham Place, 10-3pm.
