Beach Shoes Combines Rock and Sole!
Visitors to the Fishermen’s Beach last week might have been baffled to see a group of people – including the Mayor, James Bacon – modelling a fancy new kind of beach footwear. The reason was the official launch of Wavers Beachwear, a brand-new Hastings company run by West Hill residents Paul Moody and partner Liz Beardsworth.

With a design inspired by the boardwalk at Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach, Wavers are an entirely new kind of beach shoe, designed for both swimming and hanging out in. “Going to the beach for the day is about the most fun thing you can do,” explains Moody, who thought up the idea in 2018. “But sharp stones and pebbles can make it really challenging. Wavers solve that problem. They’re great for swimming, but because they’re ultra-quick drying, you can also wear them home afterwards. They’re the sea shoes to be seen in”.
The word-of-mouth success of their Instagram account @waversbeachwear has seen customer orders come in from across the world, but Wavers are also stocked locally in Capsule in Courthouse Street. Moody’s past as a rock journalist for NME and Uncut, meanwhile, has prepared him for the hazards he and Liz will face when squaring up to the giants of the shoe industry.
“I’ve had a machine gun pointed at me by Kid Rock, been to three continents in one day with Def Leppard, and been thrown in a Mexican gaol with a band called Trail of Dead,” he says with a grin. “So we’re ready for anything.”
