Rare Plant Thrives
Dumortier’s Liverwort is thriving since Hastings Borough Council (HBC) took back management of Fairlight Place Farm in the Country Park. Colin Fitzgerald, lead councillor for parks and open spaces said:
“Following serious slurry pollution to the Site of Special Scientific Interest at Fairlight Glen in 2000, HBC changed from an intensive dairy operation to a mixed farming regime focussed on biodiversity enhancement… and reversed the decline in this important species.”
The plant is now thriving with half of the entire UK population within the Country Park reserve.
