<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 17 colourful murals recently painted on ‘suntrap’ booths along the seafront at the side of Goat Ledge café are the outcome of an initiative Painting the Prom conceived and organised by café owner Will Stevens and other St Leonards residents. Fronted by local project programmers Good Stuff in St Leonards in partnership with arts charity Home Live Art, and funded by a number of arts foundations and public funders (see below), the murals take advantage of the vaulted wall-spaces of the lower promenade provided by the original 1930s concrete creation of Sydney Little.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The aim of the programme, according to Good Stuff’s website, <a href="http://goodstuffinstlens.com">goodstuffinstlens.com</a> painting-the-prom is “to encourage people to feel more connected, proud and invested in the place they live, whilst providing vital economic support to local artists”. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each of the designs, responding to a set collective theme of ‘day-dreaming’, has been created individually by residents of Hastings and St Leonards. Nine are the work of local artists after a public call-out and selection by a panel from 161 design entries. Four were commissioned from community organisations – the Seaview Project, the Refugee Buddy Project, Eggtooth, and FSN. Four were selected from over 100 entries submitted by local primary schools entering into a ‘Design a Mural’ competition. Each accomplished design received a £300 fee plus materials.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The designs were painted around the end of May and are intended to last for the rest of this year and through next winter as a temporary outdoor gallery. The nature of the materials and their exposure to the natural elements of sea and wind make any idea of permanence impractical. However, Katy Baird of Good Stuff, basking in the “incredibly positive reaction” that this year’s programme has engendered, says that moves are already afoot to find funding for a repeat next spring.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On 30th May, HIP quizzed a couple of artists as they worked on their paintings.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" data-attachment-id="17060" data-permalink="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/articles/news/seafront-murals-could-be-repeat-business/attachment/seafront-mural/" data-orig-file="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/seafront-mural.jpg" data-orig-size="1476,1107" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;1.9&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;SM-A310F&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1622382092&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;3.7&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;40&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.000692041522491&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="seafront-mural" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/seafront-mural-1024x768.jpg" src="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/seafront-mural-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-17060" srcset="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/seafront-mural-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/seafront-mural-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/seafront-mural-640x480.jpg 640w, https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/seafront-mural-600x450.jpg 600w, https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/seafront-mural.jpg 1476w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Adam Donovan was creating an imaginative vision of the pier, with a boat being taken down by a Kraken. He works for the charity HFS, but studied art in secondary school, and says he always had a passion for it.. “The inspiration is my father; he’s moving away from town and also retiring, so I wanted to paint something to remind him of Hastings. I sent in my idea and they loved it.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jazmine Miles-Long, an ethical taxidermist who has done work with the Hastings Museum, was painting a design “not only beautiful but informative and relevant to the setting….I wanted to do a piece for people looking out to sea of the birds they can see while sitting on this bench.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Funding opportunities for local creative projects </strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>By Caf Fean</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the past six months of editing HIP’s Wellbeing page I have sought out people who are making a difference to the health and wellbeing of our community. One of the questions I asked them was: “What kept you going through lockdown?” The answer for me has been working with the team and participants on <em>Good Stuff in St Leonards</em>. We put in an application for funding from <em>Creative Civic Change</em>, which was successful.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <em>Good Stuff in St Leonards</em> project is all about the community setting the agenda for creative activities in the area. Thus far we have supported the <em>St Leonards Dance Troupe</em> – a dance club for the over 60s; <em>re:create</em> – an LGBTQ drama group; <em>All Choired Up</em> – an LGBTQ choir; and <em>Flexed</em> – a group of local people supporting projects for young LGBTQ people. Lockdown meant that the dancers and drama folk transferred their activities over to Zoom, and <em>All Choired Up</em> had its first ever meetings online. <em>Flexed</em>, a young LGBTQ project team, has been formed and are busily cooking up plans for a Pride Prom in winter 2021. Many more projects are brewing, and a call-out to the community for ideas for new projects has been launched, accepting funding proposals for grants of up to £2,000 to help deliver new creative projects in St Leonards.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Good Stuff in St Leonards</em> has absolutely ‘kept me going’ and kept my faith in community, creativity and connection in the face of adversity very much alive. As a facilitator of the various groups I have joined in dance routines from my living room, sung loudly at my laptop, laughed and cried at the incredible stories told by our drama group, and debated over how to create something meaningful for young local LGBTQ people. If you have an idea, and want to see it happen then please put ‘pen to paper’ and fill in the pitch form on the website: <em><a href="http://www.goodstuffinstlens.com">www.goodstuffinstlens.com</a></em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="886" height="591" data-attachment-id="14618" data-permalink="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/well-being/good-stuff-in-st-leonards/attachment/gssl_stleonardsdancetroupe_cwrite_caitlinlockaug2020/" data-orig-file="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GSSL_StLeonardsDanceTroupe_cwrite_CaitlinLockAug2020.jpg" data-orig-size="886,591" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS 5D Mark III&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1597147674&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;30&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;400&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.00625&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="GSSL_StLeonardsDanceTroupe_cwrite_CaitlinLockAug2020" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GSSL_StLeonardsDanceTroupe_cwrite_CaitlinLockAug2020.jpg" src="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GSSL_StLeonardsDanceTroupe_cwrite_CaitlinLockAug2020.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-14618" srcset="https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GSSL_StLeonardsDanceTroupe_cwrite_CaitlinLockAug2020.jpg 886w, https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GSSL_StLeonardsDanceTroupe_cwrite_CaitlinLockAug2020-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GSSL_StLeonardsDanceTroupe_cwrite_CaitlinLockAug2020-480x320.jpg 480w, https://www.hastingsindependentpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GSSL_StLeonardsDanceTroupe_cwrite_CaitlinLockAug2020-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 886px) 100vw, 886px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The St Leonards Dance Troupe, August 2020</strong><br>PICTURE: Caitlin Lock</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Current projects are all on a one-month break, and will be returning either in person or on screen, in October. Each of the projects is open to new members and the activities are free of charge. The <em>St Leonards Dance Troupe</em> has been busy with online performances for <em>Posh Club*</em> members, and has much more planned for autumn.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I asked some of the dancers to explain why it’s worth doing.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I feel the St Leonards Dance Troupe is very much worthwhile as it has created a fun group of people who might otherwise have thought twice about joining because we have no barriers, agenda or restrictions and just love to dance and laugh, which of course is great exercise for our minds, bodies and spirits. We hope to grow and expand our group in the future to the wider community, especially, when hopefully life will return to normal soon” <br><strong><em>Margaret Trowell</em></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Most forms of exercise are becoming increasingly difficult. […] Forget the aching limbs. Just dancing together lifts the mind and for many adds a new lease of life” <br><strong><em>Rachael Young</em></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Inhibitions are thrown aside, restrictions on movements due to stiff joints which in many ways prevents a beautiful fluid movement to the routines doesn’t matter. […] The best part is making new friends and laughing at our mistakes. It has been so much fun.”<br><strong><em>Despo Hawkins</em></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Good Stuff in St Leonards</em> is supported by local company <em>Home Live Art</em>, who hold the funds and are on hand to help and support the groups as they develop and grow, bringing expert advice on staging events, performance art and linking professional mentors to projects if required. The hope is that the ‘Good Stuff’ projects take on a life of their own and become self-sustaining. This project is hyper-local and all of the activity was planned to take place at St John the Evangelist’s Church Hall, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Creative Civic Change</em> was launched in response to the Inquiry into the Civic Role of Arts Organisations by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation with the aims of exploring a new approach to funding community-driven projects and to share experience and learning to inspire others to use the arts and creativity to make positive local change. The organisations backing it share the belief that creativity can be harnessed to engage, inspire and mobilise communities, and showcase the difference individuals can make as they develop collectively as a whole.</p>
