A European Union-funded initiative which has put £800,000 into projects supporting Hastings’ fisheries has been hailed a success by local fishermen and Hastings Borough Council.

The Hastings Fisheries Local Action Group (‘FLAG’) has helped 19 projects aimed at supporting the local fishery. These include a new ice making machine bought with £72,000 of FLAG funds and £18,000 from The Foreshore Trust. The initiative has also funded a training programme to help aspiring seafood chefs and LED lighting for the fish market, which is more energy efficient.

Paul Joy of the Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society said the new ice-maker  could not have been bought without the extra funding:

“We have been very pleased with the FLAG, and what it has done for the Hastings fishing fleet.”
