While the GPs, staff and patients of the Carisbrooke Surgery and Silver Springs can look forward to the completion of their new premises in Bexhill Road (read more here) in the autumn, those of the Old Town Surgery are set to enjoy the opening from next week of newly refurbished five-floor premises at the Ice House in Rock-A-Nore.

It’s been a long wait – nearly three years since the grant of planning permission in August 2017 – and, though the staff at least are thrilled with the radically improved facilities, the practice start-up can’t be celebrated as sociably as might have been liked, for obvious reasons. Although the keys to the previous premises at Roebuck House in the High Street have been returned, patients are asked to continue during the current pandemic to make initial approaches by telephone only. Those describing symptoms which may relate to Covid-19, and for whom a face-to-face consultation is appropriate, will still be referred to the dedicated drive-in surgery at Marlborough House off Warrior Square. However, those without Covid symptoms will from next Monday (8th June) be welcomed in to the Ice House if their query cannot be managed remotely.

Guestling Surgery Closes

The Old Town Surgery patient list may find itself with increased numbers from this month, as the Guestling GP surgery has also just closed following the expiry of its lease. Dr Craig Namvar, senior partner of both practices, had been hoping to be able to secure alternative premises at the former Smuggler pub building on the sea front at Pett Level, and indeed obtained planning permission for appropriate change of use at that property last year. But HIP has learnt that this transaction has fallen through after delays caused by its registration as an asset of community value.
