Writing this article made me happy, researching it made me happier and eating the foods containing happy stuff sent me into a smug delirium. Which then led to all my friends closing the door on me because I was so irritating, which made me sad. So happiness isn’t everything. Despair and misery can make you popular but that’s next week’s article: Misery Food, the route to social aptitude. If you’re looking forward to it, you’ve probably been eating a lot of broccoli.


Love your nuts and they will make you happy. They contain Magnesium, which helps develop Serotonin and helps regulate your emotions. Almonds, cashews and peanuts contain high amounts of Magnesium. A yummy alternative to picking on your partner for no reason, although you could do both.

Chia Seeds

Sold in Trinity Wholefoods, these little fellas are richer in Omega 3 than Atlantic Salmon. One needs to soak them for 10 mins before eating and can be added to porridge or a smoothie. They’re a little like frogs spawn, ooo I bet you’re licking your lips now. Omega 3 has been shown to decrease the risk of depression and suicide. Best taken with an algae supplement to give maximum benefits, if you don’t eat things with eyes. 30g of Chia seeds give you a whopping 4915 mg of Omega 3.

Brussel Sprouts

High in Serotonin, which as well as other things, helps regulate social behaviour. Confusing because they can also make you gassy, which isn’t quite classed as good social behaviour, nor is farting into cups, apparently? People can be so touchy.

Chick Peas

The words chick and peas make me happy. So sweet. High in vitamin B6, they help the production of neurotransmitters which stimulate brain activity and ward off depression. Chick peas don’t ward off small children though but us parents know that children keep you in a state of relentless joy.

Chanterelle Mushroom

Chanterelles have Vitamin D in them that has been proven to relieve depression and promote well being in both men and women. So if you have been inspired by our resident professional forager, Geoff Dann, get out there amongst it and find yourself some happy mushrooms as opposed to the deadly ones or the other ones, that I know nothing about.
