Grand Opening

Friday 4th March

Rock House, 49-51 Cambridge Road, opens its brand new doors for the first time to a host of local and visiting guests on Friday 4th March from sunset at 5.45pm.

The project has been 18 months in the making, and owner-developers White Rock Neighbourhood Ventures are delighted to launch it into its new life as a creative living and working space. Formerly an extension to the FJ Parsons Hastings & St Leonards Observer newspaper complex on Cambridge Road, Rock House was built as Rothermere House in 1969, making it the little sister to the Printworks and Observer Building.

The project is both part of the creative atmosphere that is gaining momentum in this part of Hastings Town Centre, and an antidote to what normally happens when a ‘new cultural quarter’ develops. Rock House rents are capped in perpetuity in a deliberate effort to ensure there will always be affordable spaces to live and work in this area.

With the reopening of Hastings Pier almost upon us, and the recent opening of The Source Park, the world’s largest subterranean skate and BMX venue, Hastings is certainly on the up. Rock House aims to ensure that what makes Hastings special (diversity, affordability, eccentricity) remains at the heart of the town centre.

“Tackling the dereliction on Cambridge Road came out of the long struggle to save the Pier and to make sure the neighbourhood will benefit from it. In turn the experience of Rock House has informed the development of the Heart of Hastings Community Land Trust which hopes to extend this community ownership approach more widely.” – Jess Steele, OBE (one of the partners in Neighbourhood Ventures)

    QUICK SUMMARY

Rock House is an experiment in cohabitation. The people who live and work here have to meet certain criteria of need, enthusiasm and contribution to the building and the wider community. A creative, collaborative vibe has emerged from the small creative enterprises who are already tenants. There is still time to get involved. As well as the six flats (a 2-bed, three 1-beds and two studios) further workspace is available, including 20 easy-in desk spaces on the Ground Floor. We are open and approachable and want to hear from people with big ideas that will take off and make the most of Hastings. As fabulous as it is already, we ask: what can it do next?
